I Don't Care if AI Takes Your Programming Job, Neither Should You
You should be asking, how can I adapt to a world where AI is everywhere.
Software engineers keep asking, will AI take my job?
This is the wrong question.
Worrying about losing your job to AI puts you in a scarcity mindset. It always solicits the same response on the internet, a bunch of grumpy engineers chime in that no way this crappy, hallucinating robot is taking my job.
And they're right.
AI will not directly replace their engineering jobs in the next 6 months.
But then everyone moves on and buries their head in the sand because thinking about AI is too much work and we've all got more important things to do.
Engineers should instead be asking, how can I adapt to a world where AI is everywhere?
Two years from now, do you think there will be more AI or less AI?
The answer is obvious. AI is going to continually improve. Adoption is going to expand. Worrying about AI taking your job today is a cop out.
What you need to do today, is start preparing for a world where AI is the default in our industry.
Instead of worrying about AI taking your job, worry about how to become an Augmented Engineer.
Use AI as a tool to support your work.
Yes, it's new and yes it will take time. But you will be ahead of the game rather then left behind.
Being an Augmented Engineer means working with AI. It means being empowered to go further and faster. It means being free to focus on what humans are better at while AI leans into it's strengths.
Like floppy disks, engineers who don't use AI will be replaced by engineers who use AI.
Stop worrying about losing your job to AI. Stop asking that question.
Spend your time and energy on becoming an Augmented Engineer who learns how to leverage the best of AI and combine it with the best of their humanity to be a more impactful engineer.
AI is here, its getting better, and only getting more prevalent.
You can take comfort in thinking it won't be taking your job anytime soon, or you can do the work and start adapting to a world where AI is everywhere.
Become an Augmented Engineer and future-proof your career.
